As part of MDF’s 40th anniversary, we’re sharing the unique journeys of our offices worldwide. This feature brings us to MDF Ghana, the home base of MDF West Africa, founded in 2009 to support clients across the region. With 21 professionals, the office is rooted in the mission to empower projects, programs, and organisations to achieve sustainable and impactful results, driving positive change in West Africa.
Founding vision
Founded with the vision of supporting both global and local clients, MDF Ghana was formed to “equip individuals to make a lasting difference, contributing to more equitable societies,” says Julia Appiah, MDF Ghana's office director. This commitment to growth and empowerment is evident in the wide range of services offered in both English and French, supporting individual and organisational performance across sectors and regions.
Key achievements
Since its founding, MDF Ghana has led projects that have transformed the professional and entrepreneurial landscapes of West Africa. Through initiatives such as EnterWASH, Learn4Work, and the Orange Corners Acceleration Program, the office has provided MSMEs with essential access to finance and markets. “Supporting youth-led businesses and seeing them grow into sustainable enterprises is one of our proudest achievements,” shares Julia. MDF Ghana’s work has reached 6,000 individuals, raised €9 million in support capital, and created over 7,000 jobs across Africa, supporting a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem in countries in the region.
Innovation, team culture, and employee support
MDF Ghana is known for its collaborative and inclusive culture, where each team member’s voice is valued. “Our office is not just a workplace but a community where everyone can thrive,” says Julia. Regular retreats outside the office region serve as opportunities for team reflection and strategy, while birthday celebrations recognise each staff member’s contributions. The office also offers flexible working hours, promoting a balanced work-life dynamic to meet individual needs.
Supporting stakeholders and celebrating growth
Engagement with local stakeholders is at the heart of MDF Ghana’s work. Alumni of MDF’s programs receive discounts on open-entry training, and the office regularly organises free workshops and webinars to build professional capacity. "We believe in building connections and linking our stakeholders to global opportunities," explains Julia. A highlight for the office was the opening of their new space at 13 Kinshasa Street, East Legon, celebrating MDF’s 15 years in West Africa and a transition to new leadership, a milestone event marking growth from a team of 4 to over 21.
Plans for the future
Looking ahead, MDF Ghana envisions expanding its network to deliver exceptional advisory solutions, focusing on long-term, impactful projects that meet clients’ evolving needs. “Our goal is to be a hub of innovation and sustainable development across West Africa,” says Julia, who sees future growth supported by a commitment to sustainability, with practices that minimise waste and promote a green work environment.
As MDF Global celebrates 40 years, MDF Ghana celebrates its role in this legacy, inspired by collective achievements. Julia’s anniversary wish for MDF reflects the spirit of the Ghana office: “Here’s to strengthened partnerships, expanded reach, and empowering individuals to create sustainable societies. May MDF’s dedication to capacity building inspire even greater success in the years to come.”
