The MDF Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) office, established in 2007, has played an important role in MDF’s operations within the region. Through committed efforts in community development, capacity building, and strategic presence, the office has become a positive force in the DRC.

Setting up and a strategic presence

The MDF DRC office, established in 2007, has become a key component of MDF's activities in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This office was opened to be close to our clients in the DRC and ensure the effective implementation of our projects.

Community development and capacity building

With a team of 13 passionate professionals, the office has made significant progress in community development and capacity building. One of the notable achievements includes the successful launch of the Water for Virungas project, which has had a profound impact on local communities.

This Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) project was implemented in three countries covered by the Greater Virunga Landscape, namely the DRC, Rwanda, and Uganda. In the DRC, the project was implemented by MDF Central Africa in the Rutshuru and Nyiragongo territories. The project has three main components:

  • The supply of drinking water, supplemented by community involvement in hygiene and sanitation, including the use of latrines, in the chiefdoms of Bwisha and Nyiragongo (Kibumba).
  • Conflict management at the community level using the PMP approach, and the protection of watersheds by introducing agro-ecological approaches for soil protection and the Participatory Integrated Plan (PIP) approach for agricultural production, as well as improving farmers' economic power to expand their access to WASH services.
  • The PIP approach is an innovative way of organising farmers to improve agricultural production and turn them into economic operators in their environment.

The services at the DRC office, along with its dedication, impactful initiatives, and deep community ties, are a testament to the successful implementation and delivery of many projects and training programmes, demonstrating the quality of MDF's work.

Building strong relationships through awareness activities

The team builds strong relationships with local stakeholders by taking part in local traditions and cultural events. An example of this commitment is the free short time management course offered on International Water Day.

Dedication to empowering and educating communities is a core value of the DRC office.

A look at the future

As we move forward, the MDF DRC office aims to continue creating a positive impact in the areas of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), capacity strengthening, and entrepreneurship.

As part of MDF's 40th anniversary celebrations, the DRC team looks forward to a bright future in creating impact and empowering communities.
