Mars Incorporated is a private company, the world’s leading chocolate manufacturer and third largest cocoa buyer.
As soaring demands for cocoa increased production worldwide, Mars sought to ensure more sustainable production for farmers. The challenge was to establish a comprehensive, contextually sensitive strategy and monitoring system in the Ivory Coast, Ghana and Indonesia.
MDF Training & Consultancy designed and operationalised a sustainability strategy tailored to each country, with a metrics monitoring system to measure the successes and challenges of implementing the programme. We built the capacities of the country M&E teams and reviewed management structures and systems to facilitate smooth implementation. Next to this, with our help, Mars took a leading role in operationalising an industry-wide initiative with nine of the world’s largest cocoa buyers, in total representing more than 60% of global cocoa sales, called CocoaAction.
The above strategies, metrics monitoring systems and scaling up efforts through CocoaAction aim to ensure more than 300,000 farmers will dramatically increase their yields and address challenges such as child labour, women’s empowerment and education of children in cocoa communities, in order to make cocoa a more sustainable crop of choice for farmers.
Mars now features a cocoa sustainability strategy that became the benchmark for the CocoaAction initiative. Furthermore, the automated metrics monitoring system gave Mars’ management an overview of their corporate sustainability action results through an online ‘dashboard’ to facilitate decision-making. MDF Training & Consultancy was asked to further assist the CocoaAction Initiative in 2016, as well as continue to work with Mars on their Indonesia programme.
