A comprehensive strategic plan for TradeMark Africa's

The client and The Challenge

The client: TradeMark Africa (TMA) is an Aid-for-Trade organisation established in 2010, with the aim to grow intra-African trade and increase Africa’s share in global trade, while helping make trade more pro-poor and more environmentally sustainable. Since its inception, TMA has delivered substantial gains for trade and regional economic integration in East Africa and the Horn of Africa, including a reduction of 16.5% in cargo transit times on the Northern Corridor from Mombasa to Bujumbura, and a reduction of an average of 70% in the time taken to cross selected one-stop border posts.

The challenge: How can Kenya solidify and strengthen its position in sustainable and inclusive trade in Africa and beyond? TradeMark Africa ’s corporate strategy for the whole of Africa, had to be tailored specifically for Kenya. Kenya has a central and trailblazer role to play in East Africa trade landscape, but needs to prioritize its future trade facilitation interventions for the future.

The solution

The outcome: In 2023/2024, MDF developed a comprehensive strategic plan for TradeMark Africa's (TMA) Kenya Country Programme (KCP). This plan seeks to strengthen Kenya's position in sustainable and inclusive trade in Africa and beyond. To do such a project, we conducted researches to analyze the trade facilitation landscape, identify barriers and prioritize solutions. We talked to lots of TMA experts and outside experts, analyzed the political and economic situation, looked at how trade is facilitated, and made a strategy focusing on six main pillars: 1) improving the trade and investment environment, 2) boosting the quality of traded goods, 3) digital solutions, 4) physical and financial infrastructure 5) greening trade and 6) inclusive and resilient in Kenyan trade.

Types of service provided:

  • Inception report, political economy analysis, and trade facilitation landscape assessment.
  • Final strategy document - with a monitoring framework and communications strategy - written and presented, describing TMA Kenya’s prioritized interventions under six pillars.
